Mosquito Magnet Control
58Do You Hate Mosquitoes?
I've been called a mosquito magnet a few times in my life. I don't know what it about those suckers (and yes, those suckers really are suckers - bloodsuckers!) but for some reason they somehow mistake me for the central blood bank. I think they can sense my presence from miles away and that perhaps other mosquitoes have informed them that they liked me so they appear out of nowhere. "That's funny", my friends say. "I hadn't seen a mosquito all summer until I was here with you." I used to think that sugar addiction had something to do with it, but now I don't believe that is the case since I have a primarily sugar free diet these days. As much as these bugs love me, I simply don't love them back.
So while I am normally accepting and loving of all of the sweet living creatures here on earth, I have no sympathy for these biting flying insects. Unlike honey bees which at least pollinate flowers, they really serve no purpose. In fact, they've been known to transfer disease. Remember the West Nile Virus hype a few years ago? Malaria was another big one they seemed to play a role in.
If you hate mosquitoes, this hub about getting rid of them is all for you.
Mosquito Magnet Traps: Worth It?
There are a wide variety of different contraptions available that claim to trap mosquitoes and help with control. There is everything from the Mosquito Magnet Brand trap which attracts female mosquitoes in highly suspectible areas and makes it so they are trapped inside a box and unable to breed. Then there are also vacuum type of canisters which suck them in and then make it impossible to escape. These types of systems can be somewhat effective in getting rid of our blood sucking enemies, but they are also quite costly. The most effective ones typically are anywhere between $200 - $800, which could be well worth it but also quite the risky investment if they don't work.
In the heavy duty artillery line of products for getting rid of these annoying pests, there are many harsh chemicals and pesticides. There is also good old fashioned bug spray, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. What else can be used to keep them away? Citronella has been a long time favorite, though it won't help too much in areas where nests are very often. You can get it available as an oil you light in a lamp or there are also many citronella candles.
The other thing you can do is help prevent infestation by making sure that they do not have a place to breed. They love standing water, which can often be found near lakes, ponds, fountains, swimming pools, and even in empty garbage cans or tire rims. Making sure that there are none of these situations around can sometimes help decrease their population.
